“On the First Day of the Year”

A Hymn for the First Sunday of the Calendar Year

A hymn to sing on the first Sunday of the new year when the first Sunday happens to be January 1! This one was written and used six years ago… the last time this happened.

Set to the hymn tune REDHEAD76, this 4-stanza hymn is an optimistic look into the future, stating a reliance on God for guidance.

We have also included the same text to the MENDELSSOHN tune (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing) in case you want to continue the carol-tune singing.

In case you want to use this on a first Sunday of the year that is NOT January 1, we’ve also included “Stepping into This New Year” – the same text with a different, less-specific opening phrase!
